Unknown Pictures and my History girls!!!

This picture c.1965 is of a Drexel Hill Limousine Service. The problem is the location where it was taken. I showed it to several Upper Darby people and they did not recognize the address. Looking for some help.

This picture is definitely Lansdowne Boro. Where this house is I do not know. The postcard was postmarked Lansdowne. Looking for an address.

    Unknown pictures and “History Girls”

Note: I have been doing local history for over 50 years now and I have been blessed with many history friends who help me out all the time, answering my questions and pointing me in the right direction. Many of my history friends are "girls" and know their area or specialty far better than me and they always help me. This week I just wanted to recognize them and I hope I did not miss anyone. They make my job as historian so much easier. I hope they are not upset that I called them, "girls"

No article this week, I need help getting a few pictures identified. I have been going thru my photo collection and I’m trying to identify pictures that do not have proper “id” and some with no identification at all. I’m also working on other projects including the W.P.A. 1936 Historic Site survey etc. Every historian, especially me, needs help every week. That means I go to my “history girls”, I’m blessed to have them. My #1 is Mary and she has typed thousands of articles for my collection and still does. Sue is my go to person for Darby and knows the town well. When I needed a flyer one day I sent her the info and in less than 5 minutes she sent me back a beautiful flyer that I couldn’t have done in three days!! Pat and Sheila are the Aston historians and Beth is the historian for Bethel Twp. and always help me when I need it. Cyndi is the Upper ChiChester Twp. and has started working on a book on the Twp. Angela is the Nether Providence historian and has been in charge of the Leiper House for years. Anita is my go to girl for Colwyn and helped me identify a number of pictures from the town that were over 100 years old. Barb answers all my questions on Upper Darby Twp. and always comes thru for me no matter how stupid my questions are. If Barb is busy I call Marge. Ellie is head of the Ridley Park Historical Society and her and I work together on various projects. Irene is the Haverford historian and has helped me identify and get addresses for some pictures over 100 years old. Kathy of Concord Twp. and we will be getting together soon to get proper locations for some of my Concord pictures. Lynn of Radnor just sat down with me a few days ago and helped me identify some Radnor pictures aka postcards.. One hundred plus years ago postcards were the rage and they made postcards of everything, streets, houses, buildings etc. The problems are many of the cards would just say a street not a block or intersection etc. same with buildings no number or address. Delaware County has changed a lot in the last 100 years and this is were I need help. Mary Ann is my go to Middletown Twp. person and we are getting together soon to spend a day going over pictures, addresses etc. She has been helping me for years. Shelly helps me out with several townships and loves Delco history and always gets back to me quick. Helen who I just called yesterday took on a big Chester City project, no problem.

I hope I have not forgotten anyone I appreciate all the help and time people have given me.

YES there are Men historians in DELCO!! Doug helps me with Marple and Newtown Twps. And Dave is my Chester City guy. Dave always answers and gets back to me right away. Bob helps me with Upper Darby and Rich helps with Haverford along with my cousin Dave. Stan is still everyone’s go to Delco Trolley guy. Most important man is Bob Strickler who is my go to computer guy.

This picture could be from anywhere. It was in a bunch of postcards of Delaware Co. years ago. I have no idea where it could be looking for an address. Thanks Keith

  1. Limousine picture looks like the front of St. Martin's Chapel at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, at City Avenue and Wynnewood Road, Merion Station/Wynnewood.

  2. Don't faint! No, I'm not back from the dead either. A gentleman from the Edgmont Historical Society shared a posting by you and suggested we take a look at your personal site, so here I am.
Photo #1 could definitely be by the seminary chapel. #2 sure looks like the twin houses at the corner of Park Rd. and Darby Rd. in the Llanerch section of Haverford Twp. and picture #3 could be the ancestral home of Robert Hobdell, 948 Lincoln Ave., Springfield PA. When his mother passed away, his sister insisted they sell the place and get the funds from its sale. Very sad.
There you go, hope this helps.
    Keep up the good work.

  3. First one is the chapel at St. Charles Borromeo.
Second one looks like the houses along E. Lacrosse Ave, or Rigby, or E. Stewart, but none have the arch between the windows- they've all had replacement siding. But definitely Lansdowne. Not the one in Llanerch.
Third one is not 948 Lincoln Ave, as that's stone, but it is threatened.

And some women do take offense to being called 'girls'. Please treat everyone with respect.
