Media growing 100 years ago!! Upcoming Events !!

This is Baltimore Pike. in Media looking east from Jackson St. Originally Baltimore Pike was known as Washington St. The Media Presbyterian Church is on the right behind the bare trees. Note how narrow the street is. This postcard is from about 1908

Note: Although Media became the county seat in the 1850's, up until the 1920's it was a very small country town. It was the only large town west of Chester City for many years. The arrival of trolleys to Media changed everything and Media grew very quickly.

 BUILDING OUTLOOK GOOD FOR MEDIA

Prospect Cheerful for County seat Borough and Its Environs

That there is unprecedented building activity sweeping over the County Seat this year is an undisputed fact among the townspeople, who have already witnessed several large developments in the borough and a number outside.  The most recent boom is in East Media, where Samuel Rhodes, son of Attorney Frank N. Rhodes of Media started work today for the erection of forty-three six-room brick houses in addition to two stores, with apartments above.

This is not the first development Media’s energetic young builder has sponsored, as he has just finished the erection of twenty fine homes on West Washington Street, all now occupied, and he has developed a large tract in Springfield, on Powell Road.

The homes to be erected on the new development in East Media will be on the same plan as those built on West Washington Street, with a number of improvements.  It is also planned that the two stores to be built are to be of the latest type.

On State Street, twenty-five houses are to be erected between Radnor Street and Providence Road, while on Manchester Avenue eighteen houses are to be built.  The homes will contain all modern conveniences.

Many new residents are coming to the county Seat.  Eight of the new homes are sold already.  There are many prospective home buyers.

The homes to be erected on Manchester Avenue will stand between State and Monroe Streets, nine facing the street on each side.  They will be of the same plan as the State Street homes.

This latest borough development will have a far-reaching effect on the eastern part of Media which is becoming more thickly populated as the years advance.
