Independent school districts in Delaware County were rare, but there were several. The most prominent was the Crookville School in Nether Providence Township. William Crook was a mill owner from England and by all accounts took very good care of his employees. The employees had their own church and their own school district from the 1830's thru the 1890's. Crook and company paid for everything and it was own as the Crookville School District. When the mill ownership left the Crook Family the school district closed and the students sent to the Nether Providence School District. "Tanguy" was a whole different school system. The name comes from the area of Rts. 926 and 452 where Chester and Delaware County meet. The area had it's own "Tanguy" post office at one time but the meaning of the name has been lost to history. Tanguy had it's own school board etc. and it's own tax system. Families paid to send their children there and the district took families from both Delaware and Chester Counties. When the district closed in 1950 it was the last independent school district in the state.
