Collingdale Ave. at MacDade about 1920. A very quiet time.
NOTE: Today we take post offices and mail delivery for granted and always there. But 100 plus years ago post offices were the center of town. Phones were still rare in Delco and the post office was important for news etc. Originally people picked up mail and the post office sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. Mail came by train in many towns. Many Delco residents did not want mail delivered, it would cost more and no more getting mail several times a day!!

POST OFFICE FOR COLLINGDALE
Movement Started for Restoration of
Local Office Long Discontinued
A movement has been started in
Collingdale to have the local post office which was discontinued soon after
free mall delivery was established in Darby more than twenty years ago,
restored.
Prominent residents of the borough
held a meeting a few nights ago and discussed plans for the establishment of a
post office in the borough. It was
decided to circulate petitions throughout the community and when the necessary
signatures have been obtained, they will be forwarded to the post office
department at Washington, through Congressman James Wolfenden.
The movement for a local post office
has its origin among the members of the Sixth Precinct Civic Association in the
western section of the borough. As a
result, a meeting attended by county committeemen and committeewomen from every
precinct was held at the home of Committeeman Charles Mink of Upland Terrace
and arrangements were made to push the post office plan to a rapid conclusion.
More than twenty years ago,
Collingdale had a fourth-class post office of its own, located in the B & O
railroad station. Residents of the
borough were completed to go to the addition for their mail and when free mail
delivery was established in Darby, the borough was made a part of the Darby
postal district and the local office was discontinued.
