I would like to thank all the residents of Ridley Park who attended my slide show and the two walking tours on SSaturday, June 9th. I still don't understand why all the cute girls came on the walking tours. That never happens on my walking tours!

U.S. Military All Stars, my walking tour and History Flea market in Tinicum

Ridley Park's Library is 100 years old this month!

has announced
that on June 7th at 7:30 PM there

will be a preview showing of a new dvd entitled Ballfield to Battlefield and Back–
From FDR to JFK at the Media Theater on 104 East State Street in Media, PA.

This presentation is a sixty minute dvd filmed and narrated by two former major league
players–George Case and Delaware County’s own Mickey Vernon. Mickey
and George are gone now, but through their eyes you can get a first-hand look
at life in the big leagues from 1939-1962 by those that lived it. The DVD shows
more than 80 major league players who served in our Armed Forces.

The showing will be attended by the U.S. Military All-Stars. They will be in the
area for a game to be played against the Delco League All-Stars at The Glen Mills
Schools. The game will be played on the school’s Everett Swanson Field on D-Day,
June 6th, beginning at 5:45 PM.

Cost $5:00 dollars, money to go to the library
Each tour is about one hour with ten minute rest stop.
Tours will begin and end at the library and coverparts of East and West Ridley Ave.

Presentations Descriptions
Flag-Raising (Saturday) – Quarantine season officially began the first of June at the Quarantine Hospital. Staff members hoist the flag and wait for ships to approach on their way to Philadelphia.
Genealogy 101 (Saturday) – Interested in researching your family tree? Join Barb Selletti as she explains how to get started.
Beer Making Presentation (Saturday) - Experience colonial era Beer Making with Brew Master Robert Fullmera.
Quaker Meeting Wedding (Saturday) – Experience a colonial era Quaker Meeting Wedding. A young widow hopes her parents and community will accept a potential suitor. Will they say “Yes”? Be part of the meeting and lend your voice.
The lazaretto’s history Presentation with Dr. David Barnes (Saturday) at 3pm – Join the U. of PA Historian as he presents the history of the Lazaretto quarantine hospital and the stories of the courageous doctors who headed the staff from 1799 to 1890. (This presentation will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church at 3rd & Wanamaker; easy walking distance of the Lazaretto grounds).
Herbal Medicine & Lore during the Colonial Era (Sunday) - Traditional Herbalist Jeanne Muetz Francis will demonstrate how people cared for themselves in the time before patented medicines.
Weapons demonstration (Sunday) – During various eras, the Lazaretto played host to members of the army during the War of 1812, the Civil War, and WWI. Living Historian John Symborski from the North-South Skirmish Association will be on hand to discuss weapons used during various eras.
Researching the Genealogy of Philadelphia’s Ellis Island – Barb Selletti discusses the research being done to track down descendants of the people of the Lazaretto.
French Immigrant Experience in 18th Century Philadelphia – Join living historian Fran Wilcox as she portrays a French immigrant and discusses her experiences as a guest of the Lazaretto and her life in Federalist Philadelphia.
Ahoy! All hands on deck; Ship arriving! (Sunday) – The lazaretto’s primary duty was to guard against disease. Joint the staff while they render aid to the afflicted.
Docent Walking Tours (Saturday & Sunday) – Come Experience life under the yellow flag as related by the volunteer docents. Two tours daily day. Health Certificate awarded at the end of each tour. Walking tours of the lazaretto site take about one hour over rough terrain. Please keep this in mind.

The "Antiques Roadshow" with Wilson's Auctioneers and Appraisers is BACK bypopular demand! This is your chance to have an expert evaluation of that interesting knickknack or mysterious family heirloom you've always wondered about. Outside, you'll enjoy visiting local artisans, businesses and clubs, joining races and games on the field, and exploring a Revolutionary soldier encampment. Music from the Delaware County Christian School band will kick off the day, followed by bluegrass and more from local musicians.
Historic Newtown Square Day is on Saturday, June 2nd, from 10am - 4pm at the Square Tavern on Goshen Rd & Rte. 252. Additional parking will be across the street at the Newtown Square Presbyterian Church. The beautiful Papermill House and Museum on St. David's Road will also be open with more to see and do - check your program book for more info. Tickets for both locations, including the Antiques Roadshow are $6, kids FREE.

Step into History with Us
at the 2012 Heritage Festival…
Sunday, June 3, from 11 am to 4 pm
along Karakung Drive
Haverford Township Historical Society would like to invite local non-profit groups to step into history with us by participating in the 2012 Heritage Festival. Non-profits who register will be given space at the festival to set up a display. Reserve your space now by completing the form below and
returning it to HTHS (Haverford Township Historical Society reserves the right to limit the number of participating non-profit groups).
You will be contacted by email to confirm your registration. Your assigned space will be approximately 10’ x 10’, and is on a paved surface (the road). Please let us know of any special needs you might have so we can do our best to accommodate you. Set up for the festival will occur between 8 AM and 10 AM on Sunday, June 3. After 10 AM, no motor vehicle traffic will be permitted on Karakung Drive until after the Festival ends at 4 PM. All artwork, tables, tents,
etc. must be removed from Karakung Drive by the end of the day Sunday, June 3.
The Heritage Festival will be held rain or shine. Non-profit groups are responsible for providing their own tables/tents/display apparatus. HTHS is not responsible for any damage that may occur to your display materials during the festival.
HTHS reserves the right to photograph participants for purposes of publicity for the festival.
