Europe in the 17th century has outgrown its borders. Political and religious wars on the continent and in Great Britain have catapulted its people into the modern age. The Americas have been mapped and explored for more than a century and the great Continental powers have staked their claims to the new territory. Conflict and clashes of culture are happening. Witness a period of our history that shows the expanding horizons of both Europe and America. There will also be a farm day with early colonial music (11-2), textile demonstrations, hearth cooking (Sunday only) and tea in the parlor.

AN INVITATION FROM THE NORWOOD HISTORICAL SOCIETY
May 30, 2012, Wednesday evening at 7 P.M
Mr. Andy Miller, local historian, author and
teacher raised in Delaware County will provide an up close and personal look at
the Battle of Gettysburg. Mr. Miller states, “The Battle of Gettysburg belongs to
the nation”. Yes, it does; but interestingly so Southeastern Delaware County
played a critical part in the war effort. Some long forgotten facts indicate that the
townships of Southeastern Delaware County were critical to the war efforts. Over
10% of the adult population of these boroughs and townships were in the Military
sometime between 1861-1865. One local cemetery Darby Methodist Meeting
Cemetery (1808) Springfield Rd. in Collingdale has 100 documented Civil War
Veterans. Additionally, many mills in our area provided major support for the
war.
Come join us!
Refreshments will be provided.

It is May 1778, the winter at Valley Forge has ended and the British occupy Philadelphia. The Continental Army has barely survived the winter, but with the weather improving, they are beginning to test a newly found confidence induced by the training of General Von Steuben during the winter. The Continentals are a new fighting force reorganized and much more disciplined since their defeats in the Fall of 1777. The British, who have enjoyed a winter of occupying Philadelphia are preparing to move across New Jersey to New York City. A small foraging party of British Regulars, en route to the city, have encamped at the Pratt Farm in Edgemont Township. Meanwhile, a small scouting party of American militia and riflemen close in on the farm also in hopes of foraging supplies, unaware of the British force already there…
Participating Units

Chester County Militia from the Colonial Plantation

Leiperville School

Still standing at 1124 Chester Pike in Leiperville, or if you prefer, Crum Lynne the school, built on 1874 was one of the first two story schools in the area. The above picture shows the school in it's original state before rear and front additions. The school was built to accommodate students from Ridley Township, Ridley Park and Eddystone. Two story school were unusual at the time because they were considered fire traps. Like most local towns schools were still done in small one room school houses with a teacher teaching several grades at once. If two teachers taught in the same school house it was considered two schools because of the two teachers. In those days teachers worked for one year and then they had to be reappointed every year by the school board. Ridley's last one room school house closed in 1912. The last in the county closed in the late 1940's. Today the school is the home of Target Construction.
